Jonah – A Message on Obedience
Jonah was a volatile man, a man of transparent feelings and thought processes who acted on his emotions. He told the Lord, his God, what many of us are afraid to even think. Yet God does not cast aside this rebellious, disobedient prophet. Like a loving, patient, gracious father, he allows Jonah to experience the depths of his emotions and prove to himself that “God’s ways are not man’s ways”. Every time I present this story, I imagine an older Jonah, retelling the story of how God taught him the lesson of his life many years earlier, a stubborn man until God’s grace finally broke through and he humbly chose to obey God.

The Sermon on the Mount – A Message on Commitment

Jesus begins his ministry with miraculous signs and powerful preaching. Very soon he has a following of thousands who are hungry to hear a real teacher. What they hear shocks the foundations of their very souls, and challenges the religious leaders of the day. Jesus unveils God’s heart and our inability to reach God on our own terms. The power of this 20-minute sermon, most likely a summary or compilation of Jesus’ teaching, is made clear when you hear it as if you were sitting on that green hillside 2,000 years ago. What would it have been like to hear that sermon? How would you have responded? The gospel writer says, “the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, and not, as their teachers of the law.” Presented in both English and Spanish.
Ephesians – A Message on Grace
The Apostle Paul goes into high gear as he explains our salvation from God’s vantage point. As I read this letter I envision Paul pacing his cell exhilarated by the knowledge that the God of the universe planned our salvation “from before the creation of the world.” How is it that God would take an utterly sinful person like me, and with incomparable grace and love give me new life and elevate me into His very presence? This profound knowledge urges me to”live a life worthy of the calling I have received.” Presented in both English and Spanish.

Philippians – A Message on Contentment
Paul, the imprisoned ambassador of the gospel, touches on most aspects of suffering with a joyous attitude. This surprising joy comes from a recognition of the incomparable gift of salvation, the depth of Christ’s suffering for us and the loving sovereignty of God. Philippians is a simple, personal letter that endears you to the author.

First Thessalonians – A Message on Expectation
If you want to know the effects of the transforming power of the Word of God, check out this new church in Thessalonica. Formed in persecution and with only a few weeks of missionary teaching, its fame still spread like wild-fire beyond its borders. I was intrigued by how God’s Word works in the soul of the believer, and this is what I found: the divine power of the Holy Spirit working in conjunction with the living Word will transform a humble heart that seeks after God. You too can experience this transforming grace.

Titus – A Message on Action
Here is a letter that will inspire you to action. The Apostle presents his case to his long time friend and co-worker Titus as he instructs him how to mobilize the church in Crete in the right direction. What I love about this letter is his constant call to action based on the grace that has been granted us through Jesus. We should be a people “eager to do what is good” with one eye looking up expecting Christ and with the other seeking those who need us. Paul wants preachers and pastors everywhere to “stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good.” Now, that’s a challenge!

First Peter – A Message on Hope
This is the letter that turned my life around, changing broken, bruised and defeated heart into one that was strong, searching after God, hungry to know more, and willing to trust an almighty God. This letter is written to men and women who are in the midst of “all kinds of suffering” so that their faith would be “proved genuine and would result in glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.” The words penned by the apostle will give you a different perspective on life and encourage you to walk humbly before God so that “He may lift you up in due time.” I know!

First John – A Message on Assurance
We all think of this letter as a letter for new believers: no major doctrines are discussed, only simple truths, right? Take a second look. This is a letter sent to mature churches that have known the gospel for fifty to sixty years. We all need to be reminded of the basics. I was struck by the straightforward, pointed message of this letter. It matters little to know the intricacies of every doctrine if it does not translate into a simple, obedient, loving life that honors the Lord and serves others? Presented in English.
The Book of Revelation – A Message on Justice and Glory
If you are like I was, you avoid this book like the plague. Yet, have you ever sat down to read the entire book at once? You do not want to miss this message, for it is “The Revelation of Jesus Christ.”
